Michael D. Sermersheim

 Michael D. Sermersheim, a 1973 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law, served in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps in Okinawa, Japan, following his graduation. After completing his military service, Mr. Sermersheim dedicated over 35 years of his career to the University of Akron, where he served as an in-house counsel, specializing in various legal matters pertinent to higher education. His areas of expertise included contracts, student affairs, records and information management, data privacy and security, labor and employment issues, and university police guidance.

During his tenure at UA, Mr. Sermersheim was actively involved in the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), authoring numerous publications on various topics, including contracts, computer access, environmental issues, and labor and employment matters. He was a frequent speaker at NACUA’s annual and other conferences, Ohio Attorney General conferences, as well as Bar Association seminars and various civic group symposiums.  He additionally served on the NACUA Board of Directors from 1997-2000.

Additionally, Mr. Sermersheim held the position of Adjunct Professor of Law at William & Mary Law School, teaching electronic discovery.  He further worked in private practice for over twenty years under the law firm of Mallo & Sermersheim at which he dealt with estate administration and probate matters.

He has actively volunteered with Community Legal Aid in Akron, Ohio, where he provides legal counsel and assistance to a diverse clientele regarding debt matters, probate and estate administration.

Currently, Attorney Sermersheim is the founding member of MDS Legal Group, LLC.

Mr. Sermersheim’s professional contributions have been recognized by the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, making him the first person from Ohio to receive this honor. Additionally, he has been recognized by Community Legal Aid on two separate occasions.
